Why Can't I Have Outlook and Exchange on the same Computer?

One of the common, perrennial and “whaddayamean I can't do this!?!” questions on the mailing lists is about putting Outlook and Exchange (which includes Exchange Admin!) on the same computer.
It's not supported. And while it will often (usually) work if it's Outlook and Exchange Admin, Really Bad Things (tm) can happen if its Outlook and the full Exchange installation.
